The 23-year-old singer was "really honoured" to learn 'Closer', her track with Chainsmokers, is in the running for both Collaboration of the Year and Favourite Song at the upcoming ceremony, but she wishes there were more other females on the shortlists.

She tweeted: "Really honoured to have received an @AMAs nomination but really disappointed to hear near exclusively male names... such a missed opportunity

"so many incredible female artists have released this year. hoping the coming award shows give them the credit that is due to them. (sic)".

Of the 21 categories that are not specifically designated male or female, just five featured female nominees, including Halsey's two nods, and also one for Little Big Town, a group comprised of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet.

Meanwhile, Bruno Mars is up for most awards at the ceremony, which will take place on November 19 at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre.

The 'Amazing' hitmaker is up for the prestigious Artist of the Year prize and will battle it out with Ed Sheeran, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Chainsmokers to be crowed the winner.

The 32-year-old star is also up for Video of the Year and Favourite song for 'That's What I Like', Favourite Artist (Rock/Pop), Favourite Male Artist and Favourite Album for '24K Magic'.

Ed, 26, has been nominated for Video of The Year, Favourite Song and Favourite Soundtrack for 'Shape Of You', as well as, Favourite Male Artist and Favourite Artist.

And hip-hop star Kendrick is a big contender to bag some prizes on the night as he has the chance to take home Artist of The Year, Favourite Artist (rap/hip-hop), Favourite Album for 'DAMN' and Favourite Song for 'Humble'.
