Hailee Steinfeld was home-schooled to escape bullying.
The 18-year-old actress' burgeoning career meant she missed a lot of education, but eventually dropped out of mainstream education completely because of the attitude of her classmates.
Explaining why she was home-schooled, she said: "[Bullying] was a factor. Along with [my film] schedule picking up. I was the new kid in school so that came into play. There was no second thought, because it was all around a not-so-great experience."
The 'Pitch Perfect 2' actress admits her career means she misses out on some teenage experiences and particularly found it touch when she turned 18.
She said: "It is definitely hard, being on the other side of the world, knowing that you're missing out. [On my 18th birthday] I was texting my friends: 'Guys, I'm 18!' The next day I woke up to all these messages saying happy birthday, and by that time, I was kind of over it."
Hailee is regarded as a role model but tries not to lead her life according to what other people might think.
She told the new issue of Flare magazine: "Everyone makes mistakes. In the world we live in, our mistakes are highlighted over everything else. But I think as long as I do what I love, then people can choose to look up to me or not."
