Gwyneth Paltrow says it wasn't her idea to use the term "Conscious Uncoupling" in her marriage split announcement.

The 42-year-old actress and Coldplay singer Chris Martin were derided for using the phrase when they announced they were separating after nine years of marriage in 2014 but the 'Iron Man 3' star has now admitted the wording on her Goop website posting was nothing to do with her.

She told FastCompany.com: "When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Editorial Director ] Elise Loehnen titled the piece Conscious Uncoupling and I had no idea. When something like that happens, I think everybody is like, 'Oh, s**t.'

"I just tell them that I think we are creating interesting discussions."

Gwyneth and her team were also slammed for publishing a piece on vaginal-steaming and the actress once again defended her editorial director for running it.

She said: "This is a thousands-of-years-old practice in Korean spas."

Elise added: "It feels good, it's not harmful, it's not like we're urging people to go out and buy AK-47s."

While Gwyneth's mother Blythe Danner is proud of her daughter and Chris for how they handled the split, she has admitted in the past that even she struggled to understand the phrase they used.

She said: "People make fun of this, um, what do they call it? What is that thing that they've been doing? Separating, but being?"

When reminded it was 'conscious uncoupling', she added: "Yes, but it's called 'conscious' . . . not 'conscious uncoupling.' Conscious..."
