Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's split was "a long time coming".
A source has claimed the couple - who have filed for divorce after nearly 13-years of marriage - have had the terms of their split worked out for months so things could end "quickly and easily.
The insider told Us Weekly magazine: "It only looks sudden, but everything was worked out months ago so paperwork could be filed and the marriage could be ended quickly and easily.
"Things were rocky before then but they tried to make the marriage work. But it just couldn't. A lot of the feeling was gone."
Meanwhile, the former couple - who have nine-year-old Kingston, six-year-old Zuma and 17-month-old Apollo together - have insisted they will "remain partners in parenthood" after filing documents for joint custody of their three children.
In a joint statement, they said: "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment."
However, the couple are said to have no pre-nuptial agreement, meaning they are likely to split their $115 million fortune equally between them as a result of community property laws in California.
