Gloria Estefan offered to "carry the gay flag" for her daughter.
The 63-year-old singer has spoken of the support she gave to 25-year-old Emily - who she has with husband Emilio - when she was coming to terms with her sexuality, even at a time when her offspring was still uncertain about how she felt.
Speaking to Emily and her niece Lili on the next episode of 'Red Table Talk: The Estefans', Gloria said: "We had no clue. You say, 'How could we not have known?' It's not like we didn't suspect at some moments.
"I remember being in my bedroom and telling you, 'Mama, are you gay? Do you want to carry the gay flag, because if you want I will get on that parade float and I will carry that flag?' "
But when she asked her daughter, Emily denied her sexuality at that point.
Gloria continued: "You said to me, 'Mom, I'm not gay.' Because that wasn't the word in your mind for who you were."
Emotional Emily replied: "I was also figuring out who I am."
Emily came out publicly in 2017 when she shared a photo with her partner, Gemeny Hernandez.
Gemeny had marked their first anniversary in a social media post which read: "I don't know where you came from, but I am sure glad you are here. To 1, to 2, to 20 lifetimes more. I love you."
Emily then reposted the message and wrote: "What does it feel like to have words like THIS written about you? I'll let you know when I have an answer.. for now.. I'm just a glowing puddle."
