Emerald Fennell declared she was up for dancing naked during the BAFTAs – if she could get her frock off.
The ‘Saltburn’ writer and director, 38, whose film is nominated for five gongs at the ceremony being held on Sunday (18.02.24) at the Royal Festival Hall, London, spoke about stripping during the show after one of the movie’s stars Richard E Grant, 66, said on the red carpet the cast were planning a nude dance during the ceremony in honour of actor Barry Keoghan’s nude scene in the movie.
Emerald, who was wearing a black frock fastened at the front with red jewel-like roses, said when asked if she would be joining in: “If I could get out of whatever upholstery is keeping me in this dress, I think I would. But I think I’m stuck.”
She added about her gown: “I’m never taking it off – which is good, actually, because I don’t think I can take it off.”
Emerald added about her fellow nominees: “It’s just been an incredible – just an amazing – year for film, if you’re a film fan.
‘Just to be among these incredible people – it’s amazing.”
She said about ‘Saltburn’, which sees an aristocratic murderously conned by demented student Oliver Quick, played by 31-year-old Barry Keoghan: “It’ s a very gothic movie – and we’re a gothic group the British.
“We like a dark comedy. We like a romance that is also a horror. We contain multitudes, and it’s worrying.”
Heaping praise on Barry, the writer added: “He’s one of the best actors, not only out there, but perhaps in the history of screen acting.
“There’s no one like him – he’s extraordinary.”
She said about the rest of the ‘Saltburn’ cast: “Carey Mulligan who came in for five minutes… everyone, the people who came in for one scene, were the best.”
