The 'On My Mind' singer had been happily dating the McBusted bassist for the past few years but admitted things could have been very different as she originally thought he would be perfect for her pal.

Ellie told The Sun newspaper: "I approached him to set him up with my friend.

"Then I was like, 'No! I've got to have him.' It was a bit mean.

"The friend that it was for is really happy and in a relationship now."

Things are so serious between Ellie, 28 and 27-year-old Dougie that they have discussed marriage but Ellie has no intention of taking her boyfriend's surname.

She said: "I like my name. Somebody said it once - 'Ellie Poynter'. I was like, 'No, I don't like that'."

And Ellie previously admitted they have talked about having children together.

She explained: "My sister has a baby five months ago and she's the most adorable kid. She is gorgeous and I'm not just saying that. Having a baby is so life affirming and such a beautiful thing.

"And I'm nearly 30. I'm not a teenager any more so yes, I'm broody. Dougie and I do talk about babies, it's natural I suppose. We talk without it being weird."
