The 26-year-old singer admitted her partner "couldn't handle the fact" she earned more than him but she thinks it's common for couples not to have the same salaries and they just need to learn how to properly navigate the situation.

She said: "I think I’ve been broken up with because of it, but not because of my money situation. Where you’re making more money, and the other person feels insecure about that, and can’t handle the fact that you are the higher paid in a pair, and I think that was one of the reasons why that relationship ended.

" I think ultimately there is always going to be one that is more successful than the other - it’s just how you deal with it and which way round it is."

Ella is more interested in how much a partner enjoys their job than how much they get paid for doing it, so long as they are still ambitious.

Speaking on Badoo's 'Truth Flirts' YouTube series, she told guests Kelz Dyke and Char Ellesse: "I think it’s really important for me to date somebody who likes their job, regardless of how much they’re earning. Because it just says so much more, you’ve found your thing, you enjoy it and you’re ambitious towards working to a different level...

“Even if someone is on a lesser salary than me, as long as they have ambition as big as mine - to grow and have more from life, then I can stick with them and we can work together.

"But I think it’s when you date somebody that’s on a lesser salary who is cool, and is happy like that, then I can see later down the relationship you could have issues because it becomes a little bit like, who’s going to pay for this?"

While the 'Just Got Paid' hitmaker is "flattered and honoured" when a guy wants to pay on a date, she will always offer to pay her share.

She said: "I personally don’t mind going halves, particularly if I have no intention on going on a second, and I find it annoying when I want to pay, and they don’t let you. If a guy wants to treat me, I’m flattered, and honoured, particularly if I like them more.

"If I like them, it’s a nice thing. But I will always offer, because I will never expect to pay the bill. I never want to be that person that’s expecting it, so I will always offer and if I like them, and they’re like, ' want to do it', I’m like, OK."
