Diane Keaton loves going on a road trip at Christmas.
The 69-year-old actress - who is a single parent to adopted children Dexter, 20, and 15-year-old Duke - enjoyed a traditional holiday season when she was a child and though she had a good time, she now prefers her new family ritual of exploring California.
She said: "What I love to do [at Christmas] is get into the car with the kids and our dog Emmy and drive up north to see the country.
"When I was a kid, we had the whole traditional Christmas thing with the tree and the dinner and the aunts and cousins and I remember loving it.
"But I also remember getting into the car with the family at other times and taking trips around California and I loved that too.
"California is the best place in the world for me and I love to get out there.
"Now I'm older, I'm swapping one tradition for another and we have the best time."
The 'Christmas with the Coopers' star is fascinated by how different her daughter has grown up to be.
She said: "Dexter is really interesting because she's so different to me. She's the managerial type and very practical.
"She's good to have around because she likes to get everything just right.
"Duke - well, he's such a guy and he likes, guess what, sports and guitars."
