Derek Hough’s wife Hayley Erbert has undergone emergency brain surgery.
The ‘Dancing with the Stars’ pro dancer turned judge on the show, 38, told his Instagram followers on Thursday (07.12.23) his 29-year-old partner, who he married in August, had become “disoriented and was taken to the hospital” at the end of their show in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night.
He told fans: “She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy.”
A craniectomy is a neurosurgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the skull in order to relieve pressure on the brain.
It is used to treat conditions including an intracranial hematoma – a build-up of blood within the brain tissue or underneath the skull, which then presses on the brain.
It’s usually caused by a blood vessel in the brain that bursts, typically as a result of some sort of head trauma.
In his new Instagram post, Derek did not say whether Hayley had recently sustained an injury to her head – but the pair were in a serious car accident in the mountains last December.
At the time, Hayley said she and Derek were “both okay” following the crash and that she “only walked away a little banged up” with “a swollen face and four stitches” above her eyebrow.
She added alongside photos of her battered face: “I am blown away and grateful for my body’s ability to heal so quickly (red heart emoji.) I’m manifesting that 2023 is a year of health and strength. No more injuries (laughing crying emoji.)”
Derek also stressed Hayley, whom he married in August, was “in a stable condition” following the operation.
He added: “I want to thank the first responders and medical personnel who have cared for and continue to care for her. I ask for your prayers and positivity during this time.”
