Dakota Johnson thinks Hollywood is "f***ing brutal".

The 'Black Mass' actress has hit out at ageism in the movie industry, insisting she doesn't understand how her mother, 58-year-old Melanie Griffith and her 85-year-old grandmother Tippi Hedren, don't get more work.

She said: "Why isn't my mother in movies? She's an extraordinary actress! Why isn't my grandmother in movies? This industry is f***ing brutal.

"No matter how tough you are, sometimes there's the feeling of not being wanted. It's absurd and cut-throat. Whenever I have downtime, I'm unsure that I will ever work again. I don't know what it is, but it's a definite thing that happens to me."

Despite the criticism 'Fifty Shades of Grey' faced, the 26-year-old actress has no regrets about appearing in the film and credits it for bringing her a number of new opportunities.

She told the new issue of Britain's Vogue magazine: "I'm proud of 'Fifty Shades of Grey'. I don't need to distance myself from that.

"The more work I do, the more the general public sees the different things I can do. Do I think it opened doors? Yeah. More people know my name."

In 'Black Mass', Dakota plays the downtrodden wife of gangster Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and she was happy to embrace a dowdy image.

She said: "In my real life, I don't look pretty all the time. Nobody does. I love films that are honest... That's the thing that turns me on."
