Courtney Love reckons Katy Perry is "kind of sad".

The grunge rocker isn't a huge fan of the 'Roar' singer since she got her major record label deal in 2007, saying she preferred her when she had just been discovered by producer Glen Ballard when she was still a teenager.

She told Interview magazine: "I liked Katy when she was in a black shag and the shy girl on Glen Ballard's arm at events. She was damaged goods by the time she got to Capitol [Records]. She really worked for it - 'It' being a career I find so boring it's sort of sad, but what she wears is cute and in her own universe."

While she is not so excited about Katy's brand of pop, Courtney finds Miley Cyrus much more entertaining.

She added: "Miley provided me with endless laughs at the VMAs. The Harajuku Japanese girl little bear suit was cute."

However, Courtney - who was married to Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain before he died in 1994 - reserves plenty of scorn for Miley's twerking partner at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, Robin Thicke, who is the son of 'Growing Pains' actor Alan Thicke.

She said: "Can someone inform me who Alan Thicke's son is? Like what? Wasn't he on 'Charles in Charge?' That's like Jared Leto trying to convince me he's a rock star."
