The 'A Sky Full of Stars' hitmakers are said to be the headline act at next year's sporting event, with the likes of Bruno Mars expected to appear alongside them, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Meanwhile, a source previously revealed the band were "definitely in the running" to perform at the event.

The insider said at the time: "The Super Bowl offer is a no-brainer for the band. It's the biggest show in the world and they reckon it's finally their time to step up and do it.

"Granted you don't get paid a lot to do it, but the exposure you get in return is huge. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet but they're definitely in the running."

Other names have been linked to the coveted show including boy band One Direction, who are going on a hiatus next year.

An insider said: "NFL bosses want a superstar line-up and One Direction are very much in the mix. They want a pop and rock mash-up and it is thought that Coldplay and Bruno Mars are in talks too.

"NFL bigwigs want a one-off show that will be remembered and garner the greatest audience figures ever. Obviously the 12-minute half-time show will be worth millions in revenue, sales and downloads too. With the band finishing it would be the ultimate way for the group to say farewell to their fans."
