Cheryl Burke credits her husband with helping her to get sober.
The ‘Dancing with the Stars’ professional has admitted to being an “addict” when it comes to alcohol, but she made the decision to get sober two years ago whilst at her engagement party to Matthew Lawrence in 2018.
Now, Cheryl has hailed Matthew as her “rock”, as she doesn’t know if she’d be strong enough to stay away from alcohol without him by her side.
She confessed during an appearance on ‘Good Morning America’: “I am an addict. I have addict tendencies. I was a party girl. I was on TMZ every day practically going out seven nights a week, and then I just took it to the next level and it became an issue. And it became an everyday thing for me.
“My father was a former alcoholic and I don’t know if it is genetic but it definitely runs in the family and I didn’t want to fall down that slippery slope.”
And speaking about changing her ways, she added: “When you make a decision, a big decision, a life-altering decision, your friends will change. And, you know, some people will support it. Some people won’t. And at the end of the day, you have to be OK with this.
“[Matthew] is just my rock. I don’t know where I would be without him.”
The 36-year-old dancer previously opened up about her sobriety last month, when she said she quit alcohol without the help of an Alcoholics Anonymous support group.
She said: “It was just a decision that I made for myself. And it was when Matt and I got engaged and it was during that engagement party that we were just like - or that I was like, he didn’t even know - I was just like, I was done.
“My father passed away - and then my dad was an alcoholic - so either I was gonna crash and burn and check myself into rehab or I was gonna just quit cold turkey. That’s just my personality. It’s either black or white.”
