Nurse Amanda Bruce dated Charlie for around eight months and after he revealed his medical condition to her she was still intimate with him "every day" but took PrEP (pre- exposure prophylaxis) to lower her risk of contracting the virus.

Dr. Robert Huizenga, Charlie's personal physician, said: "I was the doctor for her boyfriend, we called in other doctors and they felt the risk of transmission if she took the prophylaxis and he had undetectable level was minuscule. We can't say it's zero.

"And so basically I think my advice to her was, 'Don't do it, but the risk is minuscule'. And she elected to then go forward because she felt so close and wanted that level of intimacy.'

Speaking on 'The Dr. Oz Show', Amanda added: "I mean, if I had met him on one night, and we had decided to engage in this, I'd say, 'That's Russian Roulette.'

"The reality is, we had known each other for many months before we engaged in [sexual relations], and we were a couple, I was in love with him."

Amanda - who is HIV-negative - said she hopes 50-year-old Charlie's decision to reveal his HIV-positive status will help to remove some of the stigma surrounding the virus.

She is no longer dating Charlie but the pair have remained good friends.
