The 59-year-old actress, who is reprising her role of Leia in the hotly-anticipated movie, turned the air blue when she joked about talking to her younger self during the star-studded event at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

After her co-star Oscar Isaac - who plays X-wing fighter pilot Poe Dameron in the sci-fi film - asked her about her inspiration for reprising her role of Leia, she replied: "I asked the early, young Carrie Fisher what it would be like 48 years later ... oh wait it's 40.

"She wouldn't speak to me. She was very busy, partying and making sure I would look like s**t later."

But in an attempt to back-track on her expletives she made things worse as she continued to swear, saying: "I don't mean s**t. By s**t I mean not as good as."

The actress turned up for the premiere, but kept fans updated on her progress on social media.

Posting a picture from her vehicle, Carrie wrote on Twitter: "We probably'll be stuck in traffic thru first hour of film..bomb dogs currently sniffing the car-almost there (sic)."

Carrie eventually made it to the event, and walked the red carpet alongside her daughter Billie Lourd.

She had earlier shared a picture of herself and Billie getting ready for the event in their dressing gowns, writing: "Check out pre premiere Robe Warriors!"
