Britney Spears found writing lyrics for her new album helped her get over Jason Trawick "really fast".

Britney Spears was dating her former manager from 2010 until January this year, and penning songs like 'Don't Cry' and 'Til its Gone' for her new album, 'Britney Jean', helped her put her feelings into perspective.

She told MTV: "It was very therapeutic, yeah. I got over it really fast.

"Basically, what [the tracks are] talking about, your love is gone [but] you'll never forget it.

"The time goes by and time heals, and all those wonderful beautiful breakup things that you say."

Britney - who is now dating David Lucado - also enlisted the help of another artist who had been through a painful breakup, Katy Perry, who split from husband Russell Brand in December 2011, to help her co-write another song, 'Passenger', for the album.

She said: "We actually didn't get in the studio together. My people and her people worked it out, but I'm a huge fan of hers. I think she's an amazing vocalist and she has a beautiful voice.

"And I love the song. From the moment I heard the song, I was like, 'This is really beautiful.' So I was really proud I was able to do it."

Following the release of 'Britney Jean' this week, Britney is set to start a two year residency in Las Vegas on December 27.
