Bindi Irwin believes her late father would have been a “good grandpa”.
The 22-year-old conservationist is currently expecting her first child, a daughter, with her husband Chandler Powell, and has said she wishes her father Steve Irwin – who passed away in 2006 after being pierced in the heart by a stingray barb whilst filming a documentary – was still around to see her become a mother.
She said: “[Dad] would’ve been a good grandpa. I don’t think we would’ve ever seen our daughter. He would’ve just whisked her away into the zoo and it would’ve been perfect.”
And her mother, Terri Irwin, agreed, saying Steve would be “over the moon” about the impending arrival.
She added: “He’d be over the moon. I will say one thing for sure is you would never have to wonder what he would’ve worn during any of the milestones. He would’ve worn khaki to the wedding, khaki to everything.”
Bindi also insisted she won’t let her father’s legacy die, as she plans on introducing her daughter to his plethora of television work – including the ‘Crocodile Hunter’ series – when she’s old enough.
She explained to ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “It is so nice that we’ll be able to introduce her to her grandfather through all of the documentaries.”
Meanwhile, Bindi and Chandler announced their pregnancy news five months after they got married at her family's Australia Zoo in March 2020.
Bindi posted a photo of her and Chandler, 24, on Instagram where they were holding up a baby-sized version of their Australia Zoo outfits.
She wrote: "Baby Wildlife Warrior due 2021. Chandler and I are proud to announce that we're expecting! It's an honour to share this special moment in our lives with you.
"Though I'm still in my first trimester, we really want you to be part of our journey from the beginning of this new life chapter. We couldn't wait to share the news as this beautiful little being has become the most important part of our lives.
"Your support means the world to us. Please let me know your best advice and send good vibes & prayers to our little sweetheart. Love & light."
