Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter at the British Independent Film Awards
Benedict Cumberbatch has noted his engagement as the "most important news" of his life.
The actor announced he and Sophie Hunter are to wed by posting a notice in The Times newspaper last month, and insists that popping the question was the highlight of his year.
Speaking in central London on December 7 at the British Independent Film Awards, he told The Sun newspaper: "I've had the most important news of my life.
"That's also sort of private, I don't want to talk about that too much. But my engagement to the woman I love is obviously the most important thing of 2014 for me."
Sophie was in attendance with Benedict at the event, looking great in a demure leather dress teamed with black heels.
Benedict wore an all-black suit at the event.
He recently admitted his new fiancée is great at dealing with the attention he receives from his fans.
"She's proud of my work, she's proud of me, and she loves me.
"That's the bottom line, isn't it? That's one of the reasons it's a good fit. It could be a really difficult thing, but she's just so in command of it."
