Beck wasn't upset when Kanye West objected to him winning Album of the Year at the Grammies - because he thinks the rapper is a "genius" and agrees Beyonce should have got the prize.

Beck was receiving the Album of the Year prize from Prince when the 'Bound 2' rapper appeared on stage at Los Angeles' Staples Centre to signify his belief Beyonce's self-titled LP should have picked up the prize, but the 44-year-old musician wasn't upset by the "genius"' actions.

He said: "I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right? I still love him and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does."

And Beck - whose album 'Morning Phase' also picked up the Rock Album prize - insisted he agreed with Kanye's opinion.

Asked whether Beyonce should have won best album, he told Us Weekly: "Absolutely. I thought she was going to win. Come on she's Beyonce!"

Kanye's actions were initially believed to be a joke that referenced the infamous night he interrupted Taylor Swift's MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) acceptance speech when she triumphed over Beyonce in 2009, but he later insisted he was serious.

Kanye - who turned and walked off stage without interrupting Beck - told E! News afterwards: "I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists, to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain't gonna play with them no more. And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should've given his award to Beyonce.

"Because when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in their face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you're disrespectful to inspiration. And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyonce album and they feel like it takes them to another place...

"You all know when it meant when 'Ye walked on that stage."
