Barack Obama was one of many people to reach out to Melissa Rivers following the death of her mother Joan Rivers.
The president sent a hand-written note to Melissa in which he paid tribute to Joan who he said had thought-provoking humour.
Speaking on a special Fashion Police episode airing today in America titled 'Celebrating Joan', Melissa said: "She affected so many people, and people you would never expect to have humour.
"I received a letter from the White House, President Obama, someone who was often a target of her jokes, as was Mrs. Obama, but I received a hand-written note saying 'Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think.'"
Earlier this week, Melissa had thanked fans in a post on WhoSay for their support.
"As my son Cooper and I mourn the loss of my mother, we want to thank everyone for the beautiful cards and flowers conveying heartfelt messages and condolences, which continue to arrive from around the world and through social media. My mother would have been overwhelmed by the scope and depth of the love that people have expressed for her. It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time.
"We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother's legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many."
