Both the 'No Tears Left To Cry' hitmaker and the 24-year-old comedian have taken a step back from social media this week, with Pete branding the Internet as an "evil" place, and sources have now revealed the pair have become fed up with the criticism that has been circling them since their whirlwind engagement.

An insider told People magazine: "They're just tired of being attacked. They don't get why there's backlash when it's supposed to be a really happy time for them. Pete especially has been getting a lot of hate from fans. It's been hurtful, and he's actually pretty sensitive."

The couple got engaged last month after just a few weeks of dating, and have been constantly posting loved up updates on their social media accounts ever since.

But earlier this week, 'Saturday Night Live' star Pete caused fans to speculate that something had happened between him and Ariana, 25, after he deleted every picture from his Instagram account, including the sweet snaps of them together.

Pete later took to his Instagram Story to reveal that he and Ariana are still going strong, but that he needed to take a break from the Internet.

He wrote: "no there's nothing wrong. no nothing happened. no there's nothing cryptic about anything. i just don't wanna be on instagram anymore. or on any social media platform. the internet is an evil place and it doesn't make me feel good. why should i spend any time on negative energy when my real life is f***ing lit. the fact that i even have to say this proves my point. i love you all and i'm sure i'll be back at some point :)

"your neighborhood goon, pete (sic)"

Ariana later confirmed she would be withdrawing from Instagram and Twitter "for a little while" in order to focus on Snapchat, noting that it seems less "negative" than other social media platforms.

She explained: "Yeh! I'm prolly gonna post on der for a little while and take a breather from Twitter and [Instagram] for a little.

"Just sometimes can't help but bump into some negative sh*t that really can bum u out and it's not worth it honestly. Promised I'd always tell you. I love u sm! Be well and happy. (sic)"
