The 41-year-old actress - who has Kiyan, 14, with Carmelo Anthony - has made it clear that her teenager will always be her number one priority, regardless of what she has planned for her career.
Speaking on 'The Tamron Hall Show', she said: "As long as I prioritise him first, which he'll always be first over anything I'm doing, then kind of everything else falls into place after that. But Kiyan comes before any job or anything at all times, and everyone I work with or anyone who's a part of what I'm doing knows that."
The 'Power' star has had to raise her son differently due to the impact of her fame but is lucky Kiyan is "super responsible".
She added: "He just got an Instagram probably like a month ago, and he asked me every day for the last like two or three years. And I was so worried and so against it. I finally caved in about a month ago, and so far it's been good. We've had no issues.
"[He is] a great kid who's super responsible, which makes my life a lot easier."
It comes after La La filed for divorce from the Portland Trail Blazers athlete in June after 11 years of marriage.
The couple wed in 2010 but had a rocky relationship having split in 2017 and reuniting in 2018.
However, it was later reported the pair had been living separately since 2019 before calling it quits.
Now, La La is taking time to find the balance between her social life and busy work schedule.
She previously said: "The balancing act is hard. I'm still figuring it out, but I'm starting to understand how having that 'me time' '- having that workout time makes me a better person.
"Because before for me... anytime I wasn't working, I felt like I wasn't doing enough or I felt guilty or I felt bad. And I realized it all goes hand in hand, I'm going to work smarter and harder and better when I've had that 'me time' or workout time."
