Amy Schumer thought her "physically and emotionally abusive" ex-boyfriend was going to kill her.
The 35-year-old actress has revealed that during her twenties she dated a man called Dan who would have violent outbursts, including once when he threatened her with a knife.
In her new memoir, 'The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo', she said that during one incident he tried to break a mug over her head and added: "I was screaming for him to stop, when he grabbed a butcher knife from a drawer. And that's when I was sure he was going to kill me. It may sound cliché, but I saw my life flash before my eyes.
"I thought he was the love of my life for a long time but I allowed him to hurt me in ways that I still don't understand.
"Dan and I would go to happy hours and get drunk, and then he'd get mad and shove me little. Sometimes from the shove, I'd trip over something and fall, and get hurt."
Amy also showed her support for victims of domestic violence and insisted they are not alone.
Revealing she finally left her boyfriend a few months after the knife incident, she said: "I'm a strong-ass woman, not someone most people picture when they think 'abused woman'. It can happen to anyone. You're not alone if it's happening to you, and you're not exempt if it hasn't happened to you."
However, these days Amy is in a happy and secure relationship with Ben Hanisch, who she first met on an online dating app.
She shared: "We sent each other very simple hellos and short, funny messages ... When we met, we smiled at each other and in that moment, everything felt right."
