Amber Heard is set to sit down for an hour-long interview with NBC broadcaster Savannah Guthrie, it's been revealed. The talk will be her first public interview following her loss in the defamation trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp, where she was ordered to pay him $15 million in damages.
A spokesperson for Heard said: "Johnny Depp’s legal team blanketed the media for days after the verdict with numerous statements and interviews on television, and Depp himself did the same on social media. Ms. Heard simply intended to respond to what they aggressively did last week; she did so by expressing her thoughts and feelings, much of which she was not allowed to do on the witness stand."
The interview itself has already been filmed, taking place on June 9th, 2022 in New York City. Tight security and privacy protocols were in place to make sure that none of the content leaked ahead of broadcast, though we're sure that NBC will release a handful of clips ahead of time to promote the sit-down.
A source close to the event, told Deadline that Heard speaks about how she believes free speech in America is under threat and, how her verdict in particular could stop women from going public about domestic abuse.
She is also said to have given her own point-of-view about the intense spectacle that the trial became, with fans of Johnny Depp - calling themselves the Deppford Wives - packing out the courtroom's gallery, as well as lining the streets outside, booing Heard whenever they got the opportunity.
Heard's lawyers have said since the verdict was handed down, that she plans to appeal the ruling of $15 million, reduced to $10.4 million in damages, to Depp.
It was then suggested by Depp’s legal team that the actor was considering dropping the claim for monetary damages from Heard, if she agreed to not move ahead with the appeal.
The exclusive interview will air first on NBC News’ TODAY Tuesday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 15. More of the sit-down will air Friday, June 17 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on a special Dateline. The interview will be available on TODAY.com following the broadcast, and the special hour of Dateline will be available on Peacock.
