Agyness Deyn ‘put on’ an American accent when she first moved to LA because people couldn’t understand what she was saying.
The Manchester born model turned actress made the move to Los Angeles five years ago and found that those living there struggled to understand her Lancashire tones.
Deyn admits that her accent has now softened during the time that she has spent in the States but everyone does think that she is from Australia and not from the UK.
Speaking to Stylist magazine, Deyn said: "In LA, everyone thinks I'm Australian. I tell them I'm English and they say 'same thing'.
"My accent has definitely softened because when I first came over, I had to put on an American accent as no one understood a word I was saying."
In recent years, Deyn has made the transition from modelling to acting and is set to return to the big screen later this month with Electricity, which is being tipped as her breakthrough role.
And Deyn admits that she decided to make the transition onto the big screen because she needed a new challenge in her life and getting out of modelling was a ‘conscious decision.
She continued: "When I was modelling, I found the attention embarrassing and surreal. Not in a bad way, but because it felt like the attention was undue.
"I now feel like I didn't have perspective because it was all so much, but it was a great time in my life.
"Getting out of modelling was a conscious decision though. I fell into it after I was spotted and had an amazing 12 years, but I was craving a challenge.
"I've always been very private and I didn't intentionally drop out of the public eye, it happened because I moved to LA and all my focus was on my career change."
Electricity sees Deyn team up with director Bryn Higgins as she takes on the central role in the new British indie drama. She is joined on the cast list by Lenora Crichlow and Christian Cooke.
Electricity is released 12th December.
