Diego Costa is facing a three-game retrospective ban as a result of his behaviour in last Saturday's game against Arsenal.
The 26-year-old Spanish striker put his hands in the face of Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny, before clashing with defender Gabriel, during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over the Gunners.
Costa has been widely criticised as a "thug" and a "cheat" across social media platforms. Even Rio Ferdinand, former England defender, told BT Sport that Costa "acts like a petulant baby."
Although match officials did not witness the incident, the FA supplied a panel of three former referees with video footage, and they each ruled that Costa's actions deserved an instant red card.
Referee Mike Dean booked Costa for pushing Koscielny, but admitted that he would have sent the forward off if he or his assistants had seen the provocative behaviour. More than 50,000 disgruntled Arsenal fans have launched a petition against the referee to prevent Dean from officiating another Arsenal game.
Costa has until 18:00 BST on Tuesday, 22 September to respond to the charge. He will serve an automatic suspension with immediate effect if he accepts, or an independent regulatory commission will rule on the issue if he contests the charge.
The FA has also charged Arsenal's Gabriel with improper conduct for kicking Costa in the aftermath of the incident, but the club will appeal Gabriel's dismissal and three-match ban.
Additionally, both Chelsea and Arsenal were charged with failing to control their players in a game that was full of tension.
