The 'Space Oddity' hitmaker - who tragically died in January at the age of 69 from cancer - is up for gongs at the annual music video ceremony for his tracks 'Lazarus' and 'Blackstar'.

'Lazarus' has been given a nod in the Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography categories whilst 'Blackstar' gives Bowie a further nomination for Best Art Direction.

Elsewhere in the nominations, Adele and Beyoncé are set to go head to head with their brilliant tracks 'Hello' and 'Formation'.

Beyoncé leads the nominations with 11 nods whilst Adele comes close with eight nominations including one for her song 'Send My Love To Your New Lover', which is nominated in the Best Visual Effects category.

And Kanye West's controversial 'Famous' video will also compete for Video Of The Year as well as Best Male Video, where he will face stiff competition from The Weeknd's 'Can't Feel My Face' as well as Calvin Harris' collaboration with Rihanna on 'This Is What You Came For', Drake's 'Hotline Bling' and Bryson Tiller's 'Don't.

Pop princess Ariana Grande ('Into You'), Sia ('Cheap Thrills') and Rihanna and Drake ('Work') will battle with Adele and Beyoncé to win the coveted Best Female Video award.

Justin Bieber also receives nominations in the Best Pop Video and Best Male Video for his song 'Sorry' as well as Best Breakthrough Longform Video for his album 'Purpose: The Movement'.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York on August 28.
