To celebrate the recent publication of her novel, King of Battle and Blood (Bloom Books), bestselling author Scarlett St Clair has opened up with her readers exclusively with Female First. Here, she shares five facts you may not know about her...
1. I was born two and a half months early along with my twin brother. I like to say that I was just eager to live. I’m not sure how long I was in the hospital before I go to come home, but I had to stay a month longer than my brother and came home on oxygen.
NICU babies are just very close to my heart, and I marvel at their ability to fight and am saddened that sometimes, even modern medicine cannot save them. I am a lucky one.
2. My greatest obsession growing up was The Lord of the Rings. I was so obsessed, I tried to dress up like an elf for school. This included pulling my hair into a half-up, half-down style and braiding pieces. I was very cool, as you can imagine.
I carried my LOTR tome around school every day—not because I was reading it, but because I wanted it near. I also came home from school and watched The Two Towers for a month straight.
3. I started writing at the age of 13 after reading The Lord of the Rings. My first series was a trilogy about elves that I wrote on WordPad.
By the time I graduated, I had probably written 13 “books.” I use that word lightly because they ranged from 40,000, to 90,000 words.
I never gave up on my dream of being a full-time author and everything I chose to do supported that goal—from my choice in degrees (English Writing and Library Science), to preparing to be self-employed one day by setting up independent retirement accounts, life insurance, and finding a CPA who could help manage my taxes. Manifesting at its finest!
4. Speaking of manifesting, I create vision boards for all my goals and aspirations. Many of the items I have placed on my vision board have come true including going to Comic Cons (I never specified which, so I have been lucky enough to attend two), becoming a bestselling author, and securing a publisher.
5. I love my readers. They are the first people I think about when I make decisions about my writing, and it’s also why my schedule is so tight (meaning, I put out two books a year). They are why I try to remain engaged on social media, why I try to create spaces where I can talk to them as often as possible. They are the heart of my books and I never want to take them for granted.
With danger, darkness and insatiable romance, King of Battle and Blood is your winter must-read. The novel is available now, published by Bloom Books.
