With the iminent launch of here two latest books we took the opportunity to ask author Emily Shiner if she would tell you seven things she would love to share with you.
Here are her answers
1 - I'm married to a detective.
I can't tell you how many times I've spun around in my chair or sent him a text asking him to clarify how something works. Other ways my husband has helped: going over with me in detail what happens with children go missing and getting on the floor so I could drag him around by the arms to prove to my editor that, yes, a woman can drag a grown man's body after she killed him. (Not that my husband is dead. He's fine.)
2 - We have more than the usual pets at our house.
When she turned four, our daughter announced that she was going to be an entomologist. Eight years later, and she's still going strong. Not only do we have the usual dogs, chickens, and bees, but our current roster of pets includes 3 tarantulas (Cinnamon Spice, Chaco, and Taco), a praying mantis (Georgia), thirteen iron clad beetles (The Crew), and a vinegaroon (Vinnie).
3 - I speak Spanish.
I adore languages and majored in Spanish in college with a minor in Creative Writing. While in college, I also took French and Ancient Greek. There's just something about how words all fit together and the beauty of languages that means I can't get enough!
4 - I'd love to own a bakery. (Or work in a library!)
My first job in high school was at a local bookstore, but I've also worked in two coffee shops and was in charge of the baking for one of them. I adore being in the kitchen! Even though I'm gluten free, I still turn out more baked goods than are necessary every week, so I share them with friends and neighbors.
5 - I live in my hometown.
This one came as a surprise to me, even as I packed up after college and got in the car to drive back home. I always thought I'd move even farther away after graduating college I was offered a few jobs elsewhere (even in Guatemala!) but I felt the draw of the mountains. I love hiking and checking out waterfalls when I'm not working, so this is heaven for me.
6 - I homeschool our daughter.
Yep, the aforementioned budding entomologist? She's homeschooled. We call it "reluctant homeschooling" since this wasn't the path we set out on, but it's the best fit for her. After teaching pre-k and kindergarten for eight years, writing early in the morning and then teaching just one kid is a breeze!
7 - Both of my parents and my sister are in medicine but I’ve always wanted to write books.
Everyone assumed I would follow my family’s same path, but there was never a chance that would happen, especially when my dream has always been to write. Cheers to everyone who works in medicine, but I never had any interest in doing it. I'd much rather spend time in imaginary worlds I make up! Besides, scrubs are comfy, but pjs while working? That's the real magic.

The Books
The Wife In The Photo
I pick up the photograph from their mantlepiece and carefully wipe away the dust. The beautiful wife. Supposedly happily married and enjoying a family vacation. I know her husband killed her. And I’m going to make him pay…
This is my first job as a housekeeper, but Evan Warner doesn’t need to know that. It’s the first of many lies I’ll tell him. He just lost his wife, Lola, and now he and his young daughter Jessica are adrift. But no amount of cleaning will rid this house of the secrets that have seeped into the cracks. I never forgave Lola for what she did to me. But I can’t let Evan get away with her murder.
In their impressive home, I busy myself preparing meals and peeking at carelessly discarded mail, looking for proof of his crimes. Evan hovers and I’m sure he is watching me… even as I bond with Jessica. But whenever he catches us alone together, his face darkens. I realize I have to get her out of this house before it’s too late for her, too.
Then I find Lola’s diary, tucked away in a closet out of sight. Her words, hastily scrawled on these pages, change everything I thought I knew about this family. As I hear footsteps on the stairs, I know I’m trapped. And I’m in more danger now than ever before…
The Wife in the Photo - a totally twisted psychological thriller guaranteed to keep you up all night. You will find it impossible to put down.

The Hotel
As we welcome the Rowe family to our beautiful clifftop hotel, a shadow passes over my husband’s face. In that moment I see it: my husband is hiding a terrible secret. Has he put us all in danger?
Mark and I pride ourselves on giving visitors to our hotel, high on the rugged Maine cliffs with views of the ocean, a vacation they won’t forget. But the Rowes are strangely over-familiar when they arrive with their teenage daughter. The wife puts a hand on Mark’s forearm and her husband meets my eyes with a knowing look as I hold my little son tight. They gush that they loved their previous stay here… But I’m certain I’ve never seen them before.
Mark reassures me that the Rowes are just being friendly. We have so many visitors, maybe we forgot meeting them. When I am locked in the master bedroom for over an hour, he later soothes my panic and says it was just an accident. But I know one of the Rowes was out in the hallway listening to me cry for help. I hear one of them whispering a lullaby to my baby on his monitor. I cannot trust these people.
But as the relentless icy rain gives way to the biggest blizzard of the season and we become cut off, I realize my son and I are trapped. Mark knows more about the Rowes than he’s letting on. I’ll do anything to protect my gorgeous baby boy. But how far will I have to go, to keep him safe?
The Hotel is totally twisty locked room thriller that you won’t be able to put down. You will be glued to the pages!
