As Lucy embarks upon a 24 hour flight to Australia, she finds a text message on her phone from her boyfriend, or who she thinks is her boyfriend James; she finds that it is from another woman adamant that he has been having an affair four times in the last month. With nowhere to go and nothing to do but think, her mind is awash with her and James’ relationship, both the good and the bad. She calls him up and asks him, only to find that it was a joke played on her by one of his friends. James is a lawyer and with his persuasive tongue, she puts it to one side; well she does love him after all. But as she lands and visits her best friend Molly for her wedding, she finds herself doubting her relationship even more. It doesn’t help that she finds Molly’s brother attractive either. Lucy believes that once she gets back in familiar territory, back at home that she will be able to carry on as before, but Nathan is a free spirit with no house, no job aspirations, with a relationship on the rocks, so why is he such an appealing package over James?
Having terrible trouble choosing books, I went with this one because it had my name in the title and for once this selection process has paid off! Paige Toon is an expert at capturing the sheer panic that one would feel in Lucy’s situation, while she is on the plane and far away from home. The excuses that James gives are not good enough to warrant a rested mind and you are left right till the end still wondering if he has been unfaithful or not. This book is perfect for those searching for something more from their lives and going a little further afield to find it. It proves that even in a so called settled relationship, it only takes a holiday to change everything and make you realise that the life your living is not the right one, but just the force of habit.
The setting and the company in Australia are idyllic and provide the perfect backdrop to the emergence of a new romance for Lucy. Toon’s debut novel; a testament to her exceptional writing gift, has been followed by a novel each year since the release of Lucy in the Sky. This uplifting read is for every woman who has wanted a bit of escapism from the mundane.
