Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank museum and wrote in their guest book, which has resulted in a lot of negativity.

The 19 year old was subject to much criticism on social media sites after the comment he left in the visitor’s book in the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam. He was said by some to be "self-serving" and "tasteless".

The museum however defended the pop star, saying that they were happy that he had visited and had a genuine interest in Anne Frank;

"His comments were quite innocent," said a museum spokeswoman. "He was here for more than hour and interested in Anne Frank's life, and that for us is the most important thing."

On Saturday, the museum released a post that said Bieber had visited the museum on the previous night and that fans waited outside to see "see a glimpse of him",  while he looked around with his friends.

The post said; "In our guestbook he wrote: 'Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber,'"

A huge number of people on the museums Facebook page were outraged and posted comments back such as:

"Way to turn an inspiring moment into something about yourself"

Anne Frank died at only 15 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. She is one of the most iconic Jewish victims of the Holocaust because of her diary, which was first published in 1947. It features the conditions her and her family were exposed to while they were hiding in the Netherlands during Nazi occupation.

A representative for Bieber, who is on tour in Europe, declined to comment.
