I believe that a belief held in isolation

devoid of context, leads to fear;

Fear leads to avoidance and distrust;

distrust, fed by fear, leads to Hatred.

However, a belief tempered by, refined and re-defined

by experience, leads to an ascent of Reason:

the acceptance of, and positive and constructive

interaction with, the people and the world around us.

Reason as an end in itself, devoid of emotion and empathy,

is stark and dark, and leads to cynicism and detachment;

a step on the road to the acceptance

of the grotesque and abhorrent as “normal”.

The Devil is the detail. Those poor who voted for THAT party

for fifty years ago, are still poor. The poverty is in the pretense of “reason”.

The deliberate decision to embrace and adopt such brutal detachment

is implicit in any meaningful discourse on the nature of “Evil”.

A concept that cuts deep into the meaning of being human,

the use of the term has become politically and religiously charged.

Entrapped in a dualistic equation, the word has become a label;

if a thing is not deemed “good”, it must by definition be “Evil”.

A frivolous and self serving mockery of something that need be understood.

Are those who follow orders in a tyrannical regime “Evil”,

or does that lie with those who gave the orders - fully aware of their

destructive and malicious intent? Whether the situation be modern or medieval,

the question remains. what is the answer? What is the question?

Is it clearly defined? Without prior assumption, is it clear?

The question lurks. What do we know? The answer, maybe,

“We need each other to achieve our respective humanity”.
