Andrew Miller has been announced as the winner of the 2011 Costa Book of the Year for his book ‘Pure’.
The Costa Book Awards have the single aim of celebrating the most enjoyable books of the year by writers based in the UK and Ireland.
Andrew Miller’s novel Pure beat debut writer Christie Watson for Tiny Sunbirds Far Away, Matthew Hollis for his biography, Now All Roads Leads to France: The Last Years of Edward Thomas, Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy for The Bees and first-time children’s author Moira Young for Blood Red Road, to win the overall prize and a cheque for £30,000.
The overall winner was announced at an awards ceremony in central London on Tuesday 24th January 2012.
The winning author was decided by a judging panel including actor and comedian Hugh Dennis, actress Dervla Kirwan, broadcaster Mary Nightingale, poet William Fiennes historical biographer Flora Fraser and authors Patrick Gale, Jojo Moyes and Eleanor Updale. The panel was chaired by Geordie Greig, Editor of the Evening Standard.
