With the kids back at school and less than a hundred days till Christmas, the heady, relaxing days of summer seem well and truly behind us. The days are getting shorter but the list of things that need doing seems to be getting longer!

With more research being published almost daily about the dangers of too much technology in our lives we need to make sure that the things we are using are helping us to get more done, hopefully freeing up some all important down time to let us enjoy life.

So which tech can help us out the most? Here are 3 tools can help you to keep on top of things.

Task management

From buying birthday gifts to remembering to renewing insurance, our brains are expected to hold huge amounts of information and remind us to take action at the appropriate point. Fortunately, this is one area where tech can really help us out. There are lots of apps (free and paid) that allow you to create checklists for different areas of your life, set alerts to remind you to do them and some are even triggered by your location so you’ll never drive past the dry cleaners and forget to pick up your clothes again. Take a look at Todoist, Google Keep and Don’t forget the Milk as starting points.

Food management

One of the constant requirements for so many of us seems to be keeping the house stocked with enough food for hungry mouths. Given the increasing awareness of food waste you don’t want to over purchase but planning the week’s meals can feel like a real chore. If you want some help with this then try Pepperplate. This app lets you enter your regularly used recipes, along with the ingredients then at the start of the week you can look down the list and with the click of a button add all the ingredients for your chosen recipes into a shopping list. It takes a little time to set up but you can import recipes from websites as well as entering your own and it’s so easy to use!

Journaling

Getting more done is one thing, using the free time to create memories is another. While this app doesn’t help you get more done, it does help you record the special things you do in an easy and quick way. OneDay is a journaling app that lets you quickly and simply record what you do each day, adding photo if you choose. Taking time out to remind ourselves what went well is a great way to feel happier and provides a record which you’ll enjoy coming back to in years to come. You can even use the entries to create and print a book which would make a lovely keepsake for important years of your life such as travel, new babies or significant moves.
