Fifty Shades oF Grey

Fifty Shades oF Grey

Fifty shades unleashed the unofficial ’mummy porn’ subsection of books, so is ‘daddy porn’ to follow? With many publications out there in much cheaper packages such as The Sun and its page three Zoo and Nuts, will men begin to buy books if they are dubbed as ‘daddy porn’? Did women turn to these books as scantily clad men are not frequently available in magazines for our demographic? Unless you count the likes of ‘Torso of the Week’ in Heat, none of our magazines have visual stimulation of an entirely naked kind so we have gone to books for our jollies and let our imaginations run riot.

It had been said the men require more visual stimulation than women and that we prefer our fantasies to be conjured up by something that is written or imagined. However would this trend shift if ‘daddy porn’ was introduced? Would the sheer name of ‘daddy porn’ put men off reading it? How would men respond to a Fifty Shades-esque book about a dominant woman and a submissive man?

It certainly begs the question of how many men read erotic fiction compared to women, with several subsections and new genres coming into play such as sci-fi and action themed erotica, it may be that men read this type of text more than we think. It’s just the focus is on the women currently thanks to Fifty Shades.

Is it that Daddy porn has just not been categorised in this way and still classed as erotica? It is a common misconception that women are only just getting into erotica now; many authors would argue that they have always been intrigued by sexually charged writing. Since Fifty Shades however, despite being something that women have read for years, it has kicked up a bigger fuss. It now has a big grey tag attached to it that is known ubiquitously by its taboo reputation.

Whether books are to be published under this banner, it is certain that men will get their kicks from elsewhere and probably at a much cheaper price tag rather than the £7.99 that the average bookseller asks. The race is on: to write ‘daddy porn’ or go down to your local newsagents?!
