Social Networking

Social Networking

The Daily Mail revealed today that there is a massive 955 million users of Facebook and that if you are not on the band wagon yet, it can affect your employability and your perceived mental state. The Mail reported that it can be construed as odd behaviour if you don’t use a social network site, as most young adults of today believe it to be the norm.

It is thought that if someone does not feature on a social network site it may be because they have something to hide and as a consequence they have been deleted off the system. Ninety per cent of recruitment agencies now check potential employees before they consider hiring.

From a psychologists point of view, not social networking is believed to be a hindrance on maintaining a normal social life. Since the internet became omnipresent in everyone’s lives it has evolved into something that cannot be lived without. The reinforcement that is acquired from Facebook for instance in the way of ‘likes’ and the opportunity to write comments can have a positive influence on someone’s wellbeing, however if the interaction is negative this can then lead to feelings of anxiety once the person is offline.

The Aurora theater gunman James Holmes and the Norwegian massacre shooter Anders Behring Breivik both are not on Facebook. It is now considered that those who don’t go on Facebook may be the future mass murderers.

So in conclusion, if you’re not on it already, get on it now and stop those rumours!
