Completely unknown woman who was the inspiration behind a new film.Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a small, middle-aged woman from Punjab, whose experiences provided the foundation for the film Provoked: A True Story. After years of suffering domestic abuse from her husband, Kiranjit covered him in gasoline and lit the match. He died six days later from the burns and she was sentenced to life imprisonment.In jail she learned English from her cellmate and fought for her freedom. At a retrial the judge accepted her plea of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and reduced her sentence to the time she had already spent in prison, essentially setting her free.Her case has been referred to repeatedly in cases where women have lashed out after suffering in silence.Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman and Christina Aguilera have added their star power to the cause of abused women.
