She is an actress who is associated with classy colourful saree's and has an overall 'good girl' image. So when word came than Vidya will be playing sex symbol Silk Smitha in upcoming biopic movie, it was a shock to us all.
'The Dirty Picture' is a movie which is based on the real-life story of doomed sex symbol, actress Silk Smitha. She was infamous for her dance numbers, bold performances and skimpy eye-catching outfits. Her acting career was going from strenght to strenght but in 1996 the South Indian actress was found dead in her apartment, having committed suicide. According to news reports the actress was suffereing from depression and was dependant on alcohol.
The movie will be based on the dark side of Silk's life, a side which was a million miles away from all the glitz and glam of what people saw.
However can Vidya pull off such a role off? We all know she can play intense roles and is a superb actress. But this role will show Vidya like never before. Known for her demure appearance the actress will be stepping out of her comfort zone (or should i say saree.)
According to India Glitz, director Milan Luthria backs his choice of Vidya for Silk down to four reasons: "First and foremost to have someone like her play a character of this sort is enough reason to create curiosity amongst the audience. There is a certain grace, class and credibility that a Vidya Balan brings. Secondly, Vidya is a South Indian herself."
He continued: "The third point that went in Vidya's favour is her acting skill. We were clearly looking for a strong performer and not someone who could merely look sexy. Fourthly, she has the body of a classic voluptuous Indian beauty, something not many Bollywood actresses can boast of. Silk was never pencil thin."
However he also said that it wasn't easy for Vidya on the first day of the shoot. He told Bollywoodlife.com that: "She was an absolute professional in front of the camera, but behind the scenes there was much mental conditioning she had to engage in, before stepping out on the sets in those shocking costumes.”
The actress also tried out hundreds of costumes before the final outfits were decided. Milan said: “It requires a great deal of effort to present a lady in a manner that looks sensuous but not vulgar. I am sure that people are standing up and noticing her and the film for that very reason.”
The movie will be releasing on the 2nd of Decemeber 2011.
