Women who make more money than their male partners are twice as likely to fake it in the bedroom.
Psychologists claim that men who earn less than their female partners have a "fragile sense of masculinity" due to the stereotype that men are considered as the primary breadwinners.
It is thought that women try to ease the man's financial insecurity by faking orgasms during sex.
However, protecting their partner's masculinity comes at a cost for women as it stifles their sexual satisfaction and honest communication.
The new study has been led by Professor Jessica Jordan - a psychologist at the University of South Florida - who said: "Women are prioritising what they think their partners need over their own sexual satisfaction.
"When society creates an impossible standard of masculinity to maintain, nobody wins."
