Women can get away with telling bad jokes more than men.
New research has found that males are under more pressure to tell funny jokes as they are given a hard time when their gags fall flat.
It is suggested this is because women are seen as more attentive to others and are less interested in making themselves look good compared to men.
Making jokes is seen as an attempt to "advance communal goals" by women whereas men tend to only make humour for their own benefit.
The study, from the Yale School of Management and the University of Toronto, asked 5,400 people to respond to jokes made by "Brad and Brenda".
They were told that Brad/Brenda "tried to crack jokes all night but their date did not seem to enjoy them and they left after the first drink".
Those taking part were asked to rate the size of the mistake they thought Brad/Brenda had made and the male was judged far more harshly by the respondents.
