Officers from West Yorkshire Police posted an audio clip of the 999 call as the frightened woman made a desperate attempt to get rid of the critter.

She said: "Hiya, you're probably gonna go mad at me, right - but I've literally tried ringing everyone and you're my last hope. I need someone to come and get this spider out of my house. It's absolutely massive and I'm not even joking!"

The call operator responded: "Unfortunately the police wouldn't be able to come and get a spider out of your house."

The police force says that it receives 120 calls a day to its 999 line that are "not life or death emergencies" and urged people not to call unless it really is an emergency.

Social media users also hit out at the woman, with many suggesting that she "should be billed for wasting time".
