A study has found that covering feet when settling down for the night makes a person sleep better as it regulates body temperature more effectively than opening a window.

Lisa Artis, of the British Sleep Society, said: "Wearing socks to bed in summer can help regulate body temperature through a process known as thermoregulation. Socks warm the feet and trigger vasodilation, where blood vessels widen, increasing blood flow to the skin's surface.

"This releases excess body heat, which is crucial for sleep."

Research by sleep-tech company Simba has found that Brits lose around 17 hours of rest per month during the summer and Artis recommends stripping off entirely if you don't want to wear socks.

She said: "Opting not to wear underwear allows for better airflow, which promotes the skin's natural ability to breathe and reduces the likelihood of sweat buildup.

"Sleep is essential for our physical and mental health, and making small adjustments to our bedtime rituals can have a significant impact on how well-rested and energised we feel each morning."
