Dogs with vegan diets are healthier.
A new study has compared the health of 2,536 canines fed standard food, raw meat or a plant-based diet and the findings suggest a "nutritionally sound" diet may be best for the pooches.
The analysis seemed to reveal that raw meat was the healthiest option for dogs but the researchers say that the animals in the study were younger than those on vegan diets - which may be why they appeared healthier.
Veterinary Professor Andrew Knight, from the University of Winchester, said more studies are needed before a definitive conclusion can be reached.
He said: "We believe our study is the largest to date, exploring health outcomes of dogs fed vegan and meat-based diets.
"It analysed a range of objective data, as well as owner opinions and reported veterinary assessments of health.
"It revealed that the healthiest and least hazardous dietary choices for dogs, are nutritionally sound vegan diets."
