The UN agency has had to say sorry to Stephane Simon after pieces in his 'In Memory of Me' exhibition - which featured classical Greek-style figures posed as though they were taking selfies - was censored at the organisation's European Heritage Days event.

He told CNN: ''I felt ashamed, so deeply sad to see all these years of work and research broken.

''For two days visitors came to meet, to ask me: 'But why did you do that?' But it was not my choice.''

An UNESCO spokesman added: ''This was due to an unfortunate misunderstanding. Our entire work and mandate is in favor of freedom of creation.''
