Ukraine's government has deleted a tweet backing Boris Johnson to return

The flamboyant politician is being tipped for an astonishing comeback to Downing Street after his successor Liz Truss resigned after just 44 days in office.

Johnson is said to be trying to drum up support from Conservative MPs for the impending leadership contest and he has backing from Ukraine's government, who shared a meme based on the popular TV series 'Better Call Saul'.

The image showed the main character Saul holding a cut-out of Johnson's face and features the words 'Better Call Boris'.

However, the Ukrainian government later deleted the post after it was met with a backlash.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer admitted that he was "rather surprised" by the now-removed tweet from Ukraine's government.

The opposition leader told broadcasters: "I saw that tweet. I was rather surprised by it.

"But look, as far as Ukraine is concerned, my absolute imperative is to make sure that we're all supporting Ukraine in the face of aggression from (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.

"So I was surprised by the tweet, but look, in the circumstances that they face, my absolute focus is on giving Ukraine all the support we possibly can."

Boris had forged a close relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before he was ousted as Prime Minister and received the Order of Liberty - the highest award that can be bestowed on foreign nationals - during his final visit to Kyiv.
