Oleksii Reznikov believes that Ukraine is prepared for a fresh Russian assault

The country's outgoing defence minister Oleksii Reznikov is confident that the armed forces have enough reserves to hold off Russian troops even though not all Western weaponry will have arrived by then.

Reznikov is expecting Moscow to launch its latest attack on the partially occupied south and eastern regions to mark the first anniversary of the invasion on February 24.

He said: "They like symbolism.

"Of course we expect possible offensives. Not all Western weapons will arrive by then, but we have the resources and reserves to help stabilise and sustain the offensive."

Reznikov made the comments just hours before it was announced that he is to be replaced as defence minister with military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov set to take his place.

The shake-up comes amid a series of corruption scandals that have tarnished the defence ministry and Reznikov will now become minister for strategic industries.

Reznikov revealed that Kyiv had secured new long-range missiles but they will not be used against Russian territory - only against Russian units in occupied areas of Ukraine.

The minister has also confirmed that troops would begin training on German-made Leopard tanks from Monday (06.02.23).
