Drinking three cups of tea per day could slow the ageing process.
A Chinese study shows that healthy chemicals in both black and green tea can "positively influence ageing" by reducing cell damage and allowing organs to keep working for longer.
The biggest health benefits were noted in consistent tea drinkers but others could decelerate ageing by starting to consume the beverage.
Experts looked at data from 5,998 adults in Britain aged between 37 and 73 and 7,391 aged 30 to 79 in China and asked them how much tea they drink - including green and black tea.
Dr. Yi Xiang, of Sichuan University, said: "We found that consuming roughly three cups of tea per day may provide anti-ageing benefits.
"This could be due to the fact that tea contains numerous bioactive compounds."
He added: "Tea contains various bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, theanine, and caffeine, which may be related to its potential anti-ageing effects."
