Thor attracted huge crowds in Scarborough on New Year's Eve (31.12.22) and caused the cancellation of the seaside town's fireworks display to ring in 2023.

The animal arrived in the Northumberland harbour on Monday (02.01.23) and was seen resting on a pontoon but the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDLMR) confirmed that he had left Blyth on Tuesday (03.01.23) morning.

It is hoped that the walrus - who is also thought to have been spotted swimming near the Hampshire coast last month - will return to his normal Arctic waters.

Molly Gray, the rescue and community organiser of the BDLMR, said: "It's not very normal to see walruses down here so we can imagine that it is because of climate change. He is finding places to rest in between his long journeys and hopefully he's making his way up north again now."
