One in ten older teenagers want to change gender.
A new report suggests that a tenth of children aged between 16 and 18 are keen to switch sex or have already done so.
It also emerged that 54 per cent know somebody at their school who plans to push ahead with the transition or has completed it.
The Civitas think tank conducted a survey in England of more than 1,000 youngsters of sixth form age and polled a similar number of parents of younger teenagers.
The report urges parents to be "vigilant" over what their children are taught about sex and relationship issues.
It reveals that just under a third of older teenagers have been taught "a woman can have a penis" while one in five has been told that "a man can get pregnant".
Report author Jo-Anne Nadler said: "Parents need to be vigilant about exactly what is being taught to children and by whom."
